How To Make A Successful Career In Fitness

Kristina Olson reveals how she became a success in the health and fitness industry so you can get paid for working out while hitting your physique and financial goals.

How did you become a sponsored athlete? This is a question I’m always asked. My response usually entails a brief overview of my background in music, TV and film. Although I’ve only worked in the fitness industry for a couple of years, my life as an entrepreneur started straight after high school. Since then I’ve discovered some important keys to becoming a business magnate. Please, use them to further your healthy ambitions.

Cold emails for warm response

I’m the queen of cold emails. In all honesty, you’ll strike out more than you will succeed. However, it only takes one or two positive responses to make it worthwhile. For instance, say there’s a company you’d really like to work with but you have no contacts there.

A cold email is a great option for this situation. Just because you have no introduction, it doesn’t mean you can’t take the bull by the horns and make some magic happen.

Let’s be honest: how difficult is it to send a well-written email? If it goes well, the payoff could be huge. In the worst-case scenario, they don’t respond or say no. If you don’t ask, you don’t get, so be your own advocate.

Grow your personal brand

Your reputation is fragile. It takes years to build a good one and just a second to destroy it. A reputation that precedes you is built not only through your interactions with colleagues, but also with how you present yourself on social media.

Sure, some people get away with some pretty wild stuff these days, but why put yourself in a position to fail? Big brands and FTSE 100 companies, for the most part, are not going to invest in a liability.

When growing your personal brand or image, it’s important to approach it as if you are the product you’re selling. Those that choose to do business with you are buying into you, not just your skills. In short, handle your reputation with care because it can make or break you.

Relationships get contracts

Building relationships in business is nothing new, but building relationships in the age of the internet is a whole different beast. Emails can easily come off blunt, be misconstrued and taken out of context.

Honing your email finesse goes a long way

Another important aspect of building relationships is the ‘two-way street’ factor. Relationships are not a one-way street. It’s important for them to be beneficial to both parties in order to really develop the bond. No one likes doing things for free, so find ways you can add value to the relationship that’ll enable growth over time.

Sportsmanship wins even when you lose

The sound of the word ‘sportsmanship’ may bring back some childhood memories from the school sports fields, but the same rules apply. Don’t think that nobody’s watching you. Trust me when I say they are paying attention.

A positive attitude goes a long way. If at first you don’t succeed, smile, grab yourself by your bootstraps and try again. Sportsmanship doesn’t only apply to solo endeavors, it also applies to team environments.

When working with a team, no one likes a diva or a know-it-all. If you’re easy to work with, people will remember you for that and be more likely to hire you in the future. Before moving forward in hot pursuit of your goals, make sure you know your short-term and long-term ones. This will enable you to focus more, hone in on the tasks at hand and effectively try out my keys to better business so you’re always
