4 Cheap Ways To Start Eating Healthier

Not being able to maintain a healthy diet on a shoestring is too often used as an excuse to ditch a training regimen – but it can be done.

Here are four nutrient-packed foods that won’t cost an arm and a leg.

1. Carrots 75p per kg*

Bugs Bunny was definitely onto something because this natural root vegetable is loaded with vitamins and packed with antioxidants of all types. Not only do they keep your peepers healthy, carrots also contain cancer-fighting compounds like falcarinol, according to Newcastle University.

2. Frozen spinach £1.56 per kg*

This is a thrifty way of keeping your food fresh for longer so you don’t fall victim to the used by date. Plus, spinach extract has been proven to aid weight loss by 43% and reduce hunger cravings by up to 95%, according to research done at Lund University, Sweden.

3. Oats £1.20 per kg*

A large bag of oatmeal certainly won’t break the purse strings, yet its health benefits are massive. A study by Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, North Carolina, US, found that eating just 2.5 servings of whole grains per day could lower the risk of you developing cardiovascular disease by 21%.

4. Peanuts £3.75 per kg*

These tiny nutritional nibbles are loaded with positive health benefits and could actually lower rates of mortality, according to a study published in the International Journal of Epidemiology. In fact, boffins found that eating just 10g of nuts or peanuts daily could protect you against respiratory and neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes and cancer. Unfortunately, peanut butter didn’t have the same health benefits, so stay clear of the spread.
